painting rags- old T-shirt
sponges- kitchen sponges will work fine

Resource-Succulent

Step1- Cover Canvas

With a large brush, cover your canvas with a watery layer of paint. In this case the background should be a blue or green shade. If you like bright colors, go for it. If you tend to like more nutral colors, you can add a bit of black or brown.

Step 2 Draw outline

Practice drawing on a piece of paper if the image appears to be complicated.
With a medium brush, draw an outline of your subject matter.
The color you use to draw your subject should be the opposite or complementry color from the background, in this case it will be red or pink. You can also do your outlines in white, as this is an easy color to see and cover over. Another advantage of using white as your outline is that it will create a base for other colors that are transluscent in consistancy.

Step 3 - Color Fields

Now that you have your outlines, use a thin layer of paint to designate the general color areas of your subject matter. Succulents are basic irregular circles and the petals are cone-like shapes. Start with 2 or 3 basic colors. You should be able to see your drawing lines through this layer of paint.
You will be forming the basic shapes and volume of each petal at this stage.

Step 4- Details

Now that you have completed your color fields, start to do the refined details. You do not have to do all of the details. You can pick an area near the center and then work your way outward leaving the background a rough stylized painted texture area.

Step 1- Color Wash

Use thin paint and a thick pait brush, Paint one color-
Blue is the best choice.
Fill the entire canvas and move the canvas around
to create puddles and organic shapes.

Step 2-Outline

Draw lines with a little bit thicker paint and a medium size brush.

pay attention to the composition

do not worry about the details.

Step 3- Color Fields

look at your resource and find the most
predominent color in each basic area.
Use the basic outline and paint with relativly thick paint and medium size brush to cover the areas.

Step 4-Details

Now put in the details pay attention to light, shadow, reflection, color variations, textures and descriptive line work. Use a small brush and thick paint.
